Sammanfattning
Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain technology in terms of economic growth has exploded the recent years. The largest cryptocurrencies today are using the consensus model Proof of Work but one of the largest cryptocurrency/blockchain Ethereum are in the developing phase of a Proof of Stake consensus algorithm. There are several ongoing debates regarding Proof of Stake consensus algorithms in blockchain technology and how an implementation will influence the decentralization properties, which attack vectors against the blockchain that will be possible and what economic resources that will be required in order to perform these attacks. How does the the different Proof of Stake algorithms face these difficulties and what are the proposed solutions? The large growth of cryptocurrencies has risen the question as to if there is an alternative way to gain consensus in the blockchain as the Proof of Work algorithm today consume enough energy as a smaller country. The aim with this Master’s thesis work is to document and highlight the problems we face implementing different Proof of Stake as a consensus algorithm in a blockchain. Generally how attacking the consensus in cryptocurrencies differs between different Proof of Stake algorithms and the Bitcoin Proof of Work called Hashcash and in particular how this will change the decentralization properties (Bitcoin’s decentralization properties) in both theory and practice. The different Proof of Stake algorithms will be examined and a comparative study will be carried out.
