Master's thesis:
Abstract
The communication in today’s railway systems is based on circuit switched data technology, i.e. GSM & GPRS etc. This technology is a narrowband radio bearer which works within the bandwidth 3-12 kbps and has a latency of 500 ms. There is a future plan to replace the circuit switched (CS) communication with a packet switching (PS) technology, i.e. replace HDLC, T.70 & X.224 (older protocols) with TCP/IP (connection-oriented internet protocol). The idea of the thesis is to optimize the TCP/IP over a narrowband bearer for ground-train communication by choosing and configuring an adequate set of parameters and functions in TCP. The parameters to be set shall be dependent on one input parameter, time delay.
