Sammanfattning
Automotive safety is shifting its focus towards helping the driver in avoiding and mitigating accidents. This started with relative simple features like Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning, but state-of-the art technology also automatically brakes the vehicle when a collision is judged to be unavoidable. These systems are based on exterior sensors like cameras and radars, which can monitor the environment around the vehicle. However, on-board sensors cannot detect everything within the vehicles surroundings. This is due to limitations in field-of-view and the fact that these e.g. cannot look around a corner or behind a summit. Furthermore, only certain characteristics such as relative position can be measured, while others, e.g. vehicle weight, cannot. This can be partly solved using vehicle-to-infrastructure and/or vehhicle-to-vehicle communication. The purpose of this master thesis is to gain an understanding on vehicle communication can complement on-board sensors for active safety technology. The students will work in Lund, with funding from Volvo Cars.
