This course ETT051 Digital Communications will give you basic knowledge of principles, concepts, functioning, performance and limitations of digital communication systems. For a more in-depth treatment of various aspects in digital communications, the department provides several courses that allow you to gain deeper understanding.
The course ETTN01 Digital Communications, Advanced Course is a 7.5hp A-level course in HT2. It gives you both a wider and a deeper understanding of digital communications and makes you prepared to understand a wide range of technologies used in modern systems. It includes e.g.,
- Practical MAP and ML receivers
- Introduction to MIMO technology
- Combined coding and modulation and OFDM
- Adaptive transmitters based on channel quality
- Fading channels and mobile communication
After the course you are able to handle complex problems in the area of digital communications and you will be able to suggest technical solutions for digital communications systems satisfying given performance requirements. Given the high rate at which digital communications is developing, this knowledge is highly attractive in today’s engineers.
In ETIN10 Channel Modelling for Wireless Communication, a 7.5hp A-level course in VT1, the focus is on the wireless communications channel. A comprehensive view of the properties of this channel, and how the channel is modelled, is given. The course includes e.g.,
- Propagation mechanisms
- Statistical description of wireless channels
- Channel models
- Antenna aspects in wireless systems
Assignments and laboratory work will give the students practical experience with analyzing and evaluating different properties of the wireless channel.
The course ETIN15 Radio Systems is a 7.5hp A-level course in VT2 which gives an understanding of how a complete radio system is designed on a schematic level.
- Design methodology of radio systems, complete systems as well as subsystems
- Performance analysis of radio systems
- Fundamental building blocks and how they meet system specifications
- Applications such as modern mobile telephony and multimedia communication systems
After the course you will understand both the function of the different building blocks of a radio system, as well as their impact on the overall radio system performance. You will also get examples of new results in the area through journal paper studies
EITN21 Project in Wireless Communications is a project course in which you will get a comprehensive view of how the different building blocks in a wireless communication system work and interact. It is a 7.5hp A-level course spanning HT1-HT2. In the course the students analyze, implement, simulate and test a communication system. Most of the time is spent working on the project, but a few lectures and exercises classes are given as an introduction to the project. After the course you are able to simulate a communication system built from different sub-blocks including both the physical layer and basic control mechanisms.
EITN10 Multiple Antenna Systems is a 7.5hp A-level course in HT1 focusing on wireless systems using MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output). Such antennas offers huge performance gains in comparison to conventional single antenna systems, making knowledge of these systems very attractive both now and in the future. Both theoretical and practical aspects are considered in the course. The course includes e.g.,
- The propagation channel in wireless MIMO systems
- Capacity of MIMO systems
- Receiver structures
- How to exploit knowledge of the channel in the transmitter
After the course you will be very well prepared to work with and develop future wireless communications systems.
ETTN15 Modern Wireless Systems - LTE and Beyond is a 7.5hp A-level course in HT1. Itconsiders the latest technology development in wireless communications, LTE and LTE Advanced, sometimes referred to as "4G". These systems are high performing and represent "state-of-the-art" in many aspects. The course includes e.g.,
- Fundamental limits for bit rate
- Systems with multiple antennas
- Multi-user communication with OFDM
- Performance for LTE and LTE Advanced.
- Trends for future systems.
After this course you will have significantly deeper knowledge concerning modern systems for mobile communications. You will also be able to critically analyze and describe such modern systems from an overall perspective.
