My research focuses on mmWave (30-300GHz) transceivers in CMOS for 5G and 6G applications. At these kind of frequencies it is necessery to use mulitple antennas, in so-called antenna arrays, that work together to achieve reasonable communications distances.
Initially, we have focused on robust LO generation for antenna arrays operating at 28GHz, see chip photos below.
Lately, our focus has shifted towards 6G, in which the carrier frequencies and channel bandwidths are expected to reach 100+GHz and up to 10GHz, respectively. This creates several interesting problems, such as beam squint and extremely small antenna spacings, resulting in very strict area constraints on the IC.
