Master's thesis:
Abstract
This master thesis will use existing commercial mm-wave (mmW) base stations to build a mono-static radar testbed [6]. This project aims to support both a static and a portable BS setup, being a remotely controlled testbed to facilitate real radar measurements in different environments. It encompasses an exploration of 5G base stations, radar technology, and signal propagation, with specific emphasis on comprehending the intricacies of 5G radio operation, particularly in the mmW frequency range. A mechanically stable testbed will be established for reliable outdoor usage, enabling precise radar measurements to discern hardware limitations. Additionally, a user interface will be developed to enable simple testbed control, including base station and measurement configuration, as well as easy access to measurement data. Finally, radar measurement data evaluation will be the second part of this thesis, where post-processing techniques will be evaluated using measured data to derive different radar specific metrics as well as testbed performance e.g., a range/velocity map, max distance to an object for specific radar cross section, max possible Doppler frequency, distance resolution, from the acquired radar data.
