Sammanfattning
This master's thesis is made at the Department of Automatic Control and the Department of Electrical and Information Technology (EIT). The aim of this thesis is to explore event based control for a server system, by using queuing theory and control theory, and implementing and simulating this in MATLAB and in Java. In MATLAB, this will be bone by using the SimEvents adn Simulink toolboxes. In this thesis, the server system will be modelled as a queuing system with one unlimited queue and one server processing the jobs. The arrival rate and the service rate will be time-varying in our model, corresponding to dierent behaviour of the users at different times of the day. The server system is event based where an event is defined as a request being sent to the server. The requests are sent randomly to the server according to a defined probability distribution. A possible application of this thesis is in cloud computing where the capacity can be increased or decreased when necessary by adding or removing servers and moving from one state to the next in a Markov chain. This dynamic behaviour can be used to utilize the resources in a more effective manner.
