Sammanfattning
Generalized Multi Protocol Label Switching is a technique for fast forwarding information through a network by usage of label switching. What differs GMPLS from MPLS is the ability to use several different devices, such as TDM- , lambda-, packet -, layer-2 and fiber- switch capable interfaces. The key feature is to let two customers connect by a link with predefined characteristics, this circuit should be active until the costumers involved decide the termination.
&nbps;
For doing this, a Label Switching Path (LSP) has to be created. This LSP most probably have to run through different Internet service providers (ISP) networks. For achieving this it is critical that each ISP has information about the other ISP’s available resources, this for being able to allocate the required bandwidth. There are several issues needed to be solved for making this possible. First of all collaboration is required between the ISP’s in several different areas. In the technical aspect the main issue is how to distribute the information between the ISP:s involved. Even if the case is that it is possible to do this technically it is not certain the ISP:s is neither willing to share the information nor the resources needed. There is also a time domain aspect; is it needed for the LSP to be set up within a few seconds and just last for a shorter time period, or is the service ordered weeks in advance and last over a longer period?
In the latter case it is not necessary with a fully automated system.
In my master thesis I will both study different approaches for using this technique globally and I will also try to see which advantages and disadvantages from an ISP’s perspective as an profit making company there is.
