Sammanfattning
Today the number of devices connected to the Internet and to other devices is increasing faster than ever. What separates many of these devices compared to classic computers or servers is that they come in all different forms and are used in all kinds of areas. The common denominator for many of these new devices connected to other devices or to the Internet is that they have a need for some type of security. Some of these devices handle very private or user-sensitive data, e.g fitness bracelets or IP cameras. Since these devices often run on a battery, it is of great essence that the devices are very power efficient. With such a requirement comes a tradeoff between security and power efficiency.

The objective of this degree project is to research the possibilities to create a situation-aware adaptive cryptographic scheme that can be used for devices with limited processing power and energy consumption. The project will try to answer the following questions:

1. How should a device monitor its network communication to determine a threat level? What should it react to?
2. How often should the device evaluate and adapt to the current threat level?
3. Under what circumstances would it be possible and useful to implement adaptive handling of security protocols in a device with limited processing power?

The idea is to use existing cryptographic schemes with various security levels and processing power, depending on the situation the device is in. The device has to determine and choose the scheme most appropriate for the situation.
