Per Ödling, Professor

Per Ödling was born in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, in November 1966.  With a Swedish father, Finnish mother, and Spanish wife, he feels quite pan-European. He received an M.Sc. degree in 1989, a licentiate of engineering in 1993, and a Ph.D. in Signal Processing in 1995, all from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. In 2000, he was awarded the Docent degree from Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden, and in 2003 he was appointed Professor of telecommunications there.

From 1995 to 1999, he was an Assistant Professor at Luleå University of Technology, advising graduate students, teaching, managing a large research cooperation with Telia Research AB, and as vice head of the Division of Signal Processing.  In parallel, he consulted for Telia Research AB and STMicroelectronics developing an OFDM-based proposal for the standardization of IMT-2000 UMTS.  There he also developed VDSL modems for standardization in ITU, ETSI, and ANSI.  In 1999, he moved from the arctic north of Luleå to historic Vienna, and accepted a position as Key Researcher at the Telecommunications Research Center Vienna. There he spent three years advising graduate students and industry, while researching broadband Internet access and services. While in Vienna, he consulted for the Austrian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority on the technical impact of the unbundling of the local loop.  He is, since 2003, a Professor at Lund University, stationed at Ericsson AB, Stockholm, as a part of a cooperation.  At the moment,  he is on a research stay at Robotiker Tecnalia, Bilbao, Spain.

For two years he served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and he has  worked in the EUREKA/Medea projects INCA and MIDAS; the EUREKA/CELTIC projects BANITS, BANITS2, and TRAMMS;  and the EU FP6 projetcs MUSE and MUSE2. For three years, he was also member of the Industrial Research Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

He is currently researching broadband communication over twisted copper pairs.  His research interests focus on signal processing and statistical communications, but range to the convergence of data- and telecommunications and technical regulatory issues. He has published more than fifty journal and conference papers, thirty standardization contributions, and a fifteen patents.
