Course Composition: Lectures (28 h), exercises (14 h), laboratory work (18 h), as well as hand-in assignments (2 tasks) and home work.
Examination: Passed hand-in assignments, completed laboratory exercises, and a final written test (5 h).
Aim: The course is intended to give a basic and wide knowledge in the application areas of coming semiconductor electronic devices and the industrial applications of established microelectronic technology. It is meant to provide background and act as a stepping stone towards further advanced studies in high speed devices, high frequency (RF and THz) design, neuromorphic devices, etc. Working from the semiconductor material, the course bridges the related areas of device physics and electronic circuit design.
Contents: The main theme in course is the MOS transistor which is the dominant device used in commercial applications. The course provides a physics based description of the MOS transistor and describes its integration in basic amplifier stages. Basic stages are analysed further and combined to form functional circuit blocks. Logic circuit applications are also introduced, where MOS transistors are operated as switch devices for digital computing and memory.
