Physical bounds in EM

Abstract: In this project, a sum rule on the extinction cross section, valid for all scatterers satisfying the basic physical assumptions of linearity, time-translational invariance, and causality, is investigated. The physical bound is obtained from a sum rule based on the holomorphic properties of the forward scattering dyadic via the optical theorem.
Applications include broadband scattering, bounds on complex scatterers including metamaterials, and physical bounds on small antennas. Numerical simulations and experimental data are used to verify the results.
