Elvedin Memisevic dissertation challenges traditional transistors with tunnel transistors of vertical nanowires

Traditional transistors are flat, made of silicon semiconductor material and get very hot. In addition, they cannot be made much smaller without short-circuits – an important explanation for why Moore's law of continuously increasing performance sees the end of the road. The doctoral dissertation presented by Elvedin Memisevic on September 14, 2017, challenges the traditional transistors on several fronts. In short, the strategy is to replace the silicon with other semiconductor materials that have better conductive properties. These materials are constructed as vertical nanowires, which means that the transistors are three-dimensional.
