Sammanfattning
The topic of my thesis project is studying the effect, which Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) will have on a highway. As an AV I define the vehicle that needs no human actions in order to navigate along the highway. The AV driving procedure is fully automated and the driver takes control of the vehicle only when exiting the highway. The main comparison will be based on whether the total trip time of the vehicle will decrease. Different scenarios will be tested to verify whether AVs can improve the congestion on the highway which is the main reason for increased trip times. Moreover I want to analyze whether the shock waves that are created due to an event, e.g. accident, mechanical failure, etc will reduce in length. I will start with a simple straight road model in order to check if the results are satisfactory and then move on to a more complex layout with entry ramps and/or exit ramps. A variable number of vehicles can be used in order to study whether the "autonomous" highway provides improved congestion behavior during rush hours.
