Sammanfattning
Nowadays, science is producing an ever-growing amount of information, which raises the question how to efficiently gather, save and operate with the big amounts of data. Such an example is the particle accelerator, which represents a machine that accelerates electrons or protons at very high energies. Basically, beams of charged particles are produced, with the goal of being used for further research in different areas, such as scientific research. Particle accelerators and their connected laboratories for scientific experiments are equipped with a multitude of control and data acquisition nodes. Examples of such sites are MAX IV and ESS based in Lund, Sweden.
A communication network designed for quick data transport in normal operating mode connects those nodes. MAX IV and ESS have no knowledge of whether this data communication network which is adapted for normal production mode will be suitable once the accelerators are halted due to malfunction or emergency stop.
The aim with this Master’s thesis work is to find possible solutions, by researching how a SDN for particle accelerators could help, in case of emergency situation or malfunction, to collect and save all the data before restarting the facilities.
