Anders Nilsson Plymoth försvarar sin avhandling vid en publik disputation den 14/12 2007 klockan 10:15 i E:1406. Avhandlingens titel är "Wireless Multi Hop Access Networks and Protocols". Fakultetsopponent är Professor Khaldoun Al Agha.
Abstract:
=========
As more and more applications and services in our society now depend on the Internet, it is important that dynamically deployed wireless multi hop networks are able to gain access to the Internet and other infrastructure networks and services. This thesis proposes and evaluates solutions for providing multi hop Internet Access. It investigates how ad hoc networks can be combined with wireless and mesh networks in order to create wireless multi hop access networks. When several access points to the Internet are available, and the mobile node roams to a new access point, the node has to make a decision when and how to change its point of attachment. The thesis describes how to consider the rapid fluctuations of the wireless medium, how to handle the fact that other nodes on the path to the access point are also mobile which results in frequent link and route breaks, and the impact the change of attachment has on already existing connections. Medium access and routing protocols have been developed that consider both the long term and the short term variations of a mobile wireless network. The long term variations consider the fact that as nodes are mobile, links will frequently break and new links appear and thus the network topology map is constantly redrawn. The short term variations consider the rapid fluctuations of the wireless channel caused by mobility and multi path propagation deviations. In order to achieve diversity forwarding, protocols are presented which consider the network topology and the state of the wireless channel when decisions about forwarding need to be made. The medium access protocols are able to perform multi dimensional fast link adaptation on a per packet level with forwarding considerations. This i ncludes power, rate, code and channel adaptation. This will enable the type of performance improvements that are of significant importance for the success of multi hop wireless networks.

Håkan Englund försvarar sin avhandling vid en publik disputation den 14/12 2007 klockan 13:15 i E:1406. Avhandlingens titel är "Some Results on Distinguishing Attacks on Stream Ciphers".
Abstract:
=========
Stream ciphers are cryptographic primitives that are used to ensure the privacy of a message that is sent over a digital communication channel. In this thesis we will present new cryptanalytic results for several stream ciphers.
The thesis provides a general introduction to cryptology, explains the basic concepts, gives an overview of various cryptographic primitives and discusses a number of different attack models.
The first new attack given is a linear correlation attack in the form of a distinguishing attack. In this attack a specific class of weak feedback polynomials for LFSRs is identified. If the feedback polynomial is of a particular form the attack will be efficient.
Two new distinguishing attacks are given on classical stream cipher constructions, namely the filter generator and the irregularly clocked filter generator. It is also demonstrated how these attacks can be applied to modern constructions. A key recovery attack is described for LILI-128 and a distinguishing attack for LILI-II is given.
The European network of excellence, called eSTREAM, is an effort to find new efficient and secure stream ciphers. We analyze a number of the eSTREAM candidates. Firstly, distinguishing attacks are described for the candidate Dragon and a family of candidates called Pomaranch. Secondly, we describe resynchronization attacks on eSTREAM candidates. A general square root resynchronization attack which can be used to recover parts of a message is given. The attack is demonstrated on the candidates LEX and Pomaranch. A chosen IV distinguishing attack is then presented which can be used to evaluate the initialization procedure of stream ciphers. The technique is demonstrated on four candidates: Grain, Trivium, Decim and LEX.

Title: “Capacity of Faster than Nyquist Signaling compared with ordinary Nyquist signaling capacity”
Abstract:
In this work, which is planned for submission to ISIT 2008, we investigate capacity of Faster than Nyquist Signaling (FTN) and compare to ordinary Nyquist signaling, when having a simple one transmitter one receiver system with Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). The capacity that is studied comes from using a Gaussian distributed signaling alphabet at the transmitter and is dependent on the pulse spectrum and the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the channel. In the work, we derive a number of conditions for pulses to fulfill in order to have increasing FTN capacity with higher signaling rate, and also to always have larger FTN capacity than Nyquist capacity.
The results are then applied to some commonly occurring pulse spectra, among them the well known root RC pulse. Its capacity is shown to increase as the root RC signaling becomes “faster”.

On Wednesday December 12, 10.15 in E:2311, Sudhir Rao Rupanagudi and Vinita Rupanagudi will present their Master's thesis "Implementation of the Trellis Decoder".
Abstract
========
This thesis presents the hardware implementation of a trellis decoder.
Various methods of reducing the computational complexity of the decoder have been discussed. A new methodology, to reduce the mathematical complexity of obtaining the branch metrics associated with the trellis decoder has been incorporated to obtain an area and a power effcient design.
Analysis of chip area occupied by the design along with the power analysis has been shown. The results obtained from performance analysis of the trellis decoder has also been reported in the thesis. The decoder was realised in VHDL-RTL and was synthesized for an ASIC implementation. Synthesis shows that an area reduction of 60% can be achieved. Furthermore, power estimations show that a maximum reduction of 42% in power can be obtained.

ABSTRACT
Mobile phones becomes smaller but yet with more advanced functions for every new generation. This paradox is possible as increased integration of digital building blocks and reduced transistor size free space for new functions. Unfortunately, not all components are easily integrated or scaled, such as the antenna, as its performance is dependent on the size. Shrinking mobile phone size results in increased impedance mismatch as the available antenna volume and the length of the ground plane are reduced. As a consequence, the performance of the whole mobile phone transceiver is degraded, since the noise increases and output power decreases with increased mismatch.
A study of reconfigurable matching networks and their improvement of receiver and transmitter performance with mismatched antennas has been performed. In the general introduction, the matching network is introduced as an Impedance Tuning Unit (ITU) and the behaviour from the fundamental building blocks to system aspects are studied. Also interaction with other building blocks in the receiver chain, such as low noise amplifier, mixer, and filter are investigated. It is shown that by introducing an ITU, which has the ability to change its matching configuration, noise performance and power transfer are improved. It is also shown that it is possible to realize an ITU for receivers in CMOS.
Paper I and II examines antenna design and aspects such as shielding and coupling. Paper III is a parameter study of a switched capacitor. In paper IV to VI ITU topologies are simulated and measured for 0.35 and 0.13 um and 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and 470 to 702 MHz. The results are presented together with system aspects relevant for receivers.

Krittanon Chalermsuk and Robert Spaanenburg
will present their Master thesis titled: “Flexible Length Fast Fourier Transform”.
Time: Friday 7 december at 11:00 hours
Place: E:3139
Abstract:
=========
The Discreet Fourier Transform (DFT) is the most straightforward mathematical tool for determining the frequency content of a time-domain sequence, at the same time, it is highly inefficient. As the transform length increases the amount of arithmetic involved becomes excessive. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is one of the today’s most important tools in digital signal processing, as it enables efficient transformation between the time and frequency domain.
Existing and emerging communication applications are based on coded orthogonal frequency domain modulation (COFDM) with various numbers of sub-carriers. Within these systems, the FFT is the most vital component enabling demodulation of data from orthogonal carriers.
This thesis addresses the pre-existing solutions and the voids being filled by this work. It systematically presents the derivation for a highly flexible Fast Fourier Transform IP core at three different levels, namely the algorithmic, the arithmetic, and the structural level. Various areas of possible optimization, such as performance, power efficiency, and area are presented with matrices to verify the results.

The work has been performed in cooperation with Perlos and deals with a joint analysis of antenna and channel influence on MIMO performance for handsets.
Abstract
========
Mobile phones are no longer used just as a telephone. In addition to the standard voice function, current mobile phones support many other services, such as text messaging, sending and receiving photos and videos and accessing Internet. Some of these services require high data transmission rate. Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) is a promising technique that can increase the capacity of a wireless channel i.e. increase the transmission rate without increasing the bandwidth or the transmitting power. MIMO is based on having multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. In this thesis the MIMO performance is studied by simulations and measurements.
The main part of the project was to study the MIMO performance by combining simulated data of a 3GPP spatial channel model with data from measured antenna far-field. From the simulated and the measured data, the channel matrix and the theoretical channel capacity was calculated and analyzed.
To verify the result of the simulation, a channel sounder was used in an indoor environment to measure real channels both in time and frequency. Two MIMO antenna terminals each with four antenna elements were build and used in the measurements as a mobile station. The base station was a 32 elements cylindrical antenna array. The channel capacity and the correlation between antenna elements were calculated.
A program was written in MATLAB that handles the simulated channel parameters and the measured antenna far field data. The program calculates the MIMO channel matrix by combining the measured antenna far field with simulated channel parameters for the 3GPP spatial channel model. The program calculates and shows graphically interesting quantities such as channel capacity, correlation between antenna elements, antenna efficiency and antenna gain.

Time: Thursday, 22 Nov., at 15.15

Abstract:
Wireless multiple-input - multiple-output (MIMO) systems, those that have multiple antenna elements at both link ends, greatly enhance the robustness and spectral efficiency of wireless communication. While most of the literature has concentrated on signal processing and space-time coding for MIMO, the fundamental performance limits are determined by the propagation channel and the way it is "excited" and "sampled" by the transmit and receive antenna arrays. We first give an overview of array design, in particular, the question of how close antennas can be spaced. Then we describe typical propagation channels and how they affect system capacity; we also consider ways to describe the interaction between antennas and channels. Throughout, the theme will be how antenna and channel properties affect system capacity, diversity, and other performance parameters.

Cooperative Interference Cancellation for Multi-user MIMO transmission
Presenter: Dr Kentaro Nishimori
Abstract:
This presentation proposes a novel interference cancellation method that utilizes relay stations in multi-user transmission systems. Unlike conventional relay transmission methods, the relay stations are used to decode the interference and transfer their pertinent information to mobile stations. The proposed method exploits the training signals and frame format of the interference when each user transmits signal with different timing. Even if external interference simultaneously arrives at the mobile stations during the transmission period from an access point to the mobile stations, the mobile stations employing the proposed method can effectively cancel the external interference because the relay station transfers the information related to the interference to the mobile stations. Moreover, the computer simulation was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. We show that the proposed method improves the achievable transmission rate compared to that for multi-user transmission with interference cancellation based on the zero forcing algorithm when the number of antennas at the mobile station is increased.

MIMO Channel Capacity Maximization of Bidirectional Yagi-Uda Array in an Actual Indoor Environment
Presenter: Dr Naoki Honma
Abstract:
At the MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) terminal, the number of the transmitter/receiver and the size for antenna should be small enough in order not to affect the size of the terminal. When the further data-rate enhancement is required even for such small MIMO terminals, the antenna, which can offer a high channel capacity even with small configuration, is necessary. We have proposed a bidirectional Yagi-Uda array, which can achieve the radiation properties suitable for MIMO. In this presentation, the experimental result on the radiation pattern optimization of bidirectional Yagi-Uda antenna is reported. Based on the measurement, it is clarified that the 39 % channel capacity enhancement is obtained when the electrical length of the director elements is properly given.

Koraljka Golub försvarar sin avhandling vid en offentlig disputation den 1/11 klockan 10.15 i E:1406. Avhandlingen har titeln "Automated Subject Classification of Textual Documents in the Context of Web-Based Hierarchical Browsing ". Fakultetsopponent är Prof. Douglas Tudhope, Glamorgan University.
Abstract:
With the exponential growth of the World Wide Web, automated subject classification has become a major research issue. Organizing web pages into a hierarchical structure for subject browsing has been gaining more recognition as an important tool in information-seeking processes.
The most frequent approach to automated classification is machine learning. It, however, requires training documents and performs well on new documents only if they are similar enough to the former. In the thesis, a string-matching algorithm based on a controlled vocabulary was explored. It does not require training documents, but instead reuses the intellectual work invested into creating the controlled vocabulary. Terms from the Engineering Information thesaurus and classification scheme were matched against text of documents to be classified. Plain string-matching was enhanced in several ways, including term weighting with cut-offs, exclusion of certain terms, and enrichment of the controlled vocabulary with automatically extracted terms. The final results were comparable to those of state-of-the-art machine-learning algorithms, especially for particular classes. Concerning web pages, it was indicated that all the structural information and metadata available in web pages should be used in order to achieve the best automated classification results; however, the exact way of combining them proved not to be very important.
In the context of browsing, the biggest difference between three approaches to automated classification (machine learning, information retrieval, library science) is whether they use controlled vocabularies. It has been claimed that well-structured, high-quality classification schemes, such as those used predominantly in library science approaches, could serve as good browsing structures. In the thesis it was shown that Dewey Decimal Classification and Engineering Information classification scheme are suitable for the task. Moreover, a log analysis of a large web-based service using Dewey Decimal Classification demonstrated that browsing is used to a much larger degree than searching.
The final conclusion is that an appropriate controlled vocabulary, with a large number of entry vocabulary designating classes, could be utilised in automated classification. If the same controlled vocabulary has an appropriate hierarchical structure, it could at the same time provide a good browsing structure to the automatically classified collection of documents.

ABSTRACT
What is a Hz-s? What is a bit/Hz-s? Or is it bit/Hz/s? These units have puzzled many of us for years. Is the Hz-s dimensionless? If not, what are its dimensions? We look into this puzzle and argue the point of view that much of communication theory – including communication cost, probability of error, Shannon capacity, and even communication with space aliens – is built in the first instance upon the Hz-s. We give the case, with some help from outer space, that everyday measures such as bits/s in fact derive from the Hz-s measure.

Maja Loncar försvarar sin avhandling vid en offentlig disputation den 12/10 klockan 10.15 i E:1406. Avhandlingen har titeln "Taming of the BEAST". Fakultetsopponent är Prof. Daniel J. Costello Jr., University of Notre Dame, USA.
Abstract:
Modern communication systems are designed to enable reliable and fast information transfer. Therefore, efficient channel coding and decoding strategies are needed, which guarantee sufficiently low probability of erroneous reception with affordable receiver complexity. For many channel codes, optimal decoding with traditional methods is prohibitively complex. The challenge therefore lies in designing reduced-complexity decoding algorithms that achieve optimal or near-optimal performance. This thesis is devoted to one such algorithm - Bidirectional Efficient Algorithm for Searching code Trees (BEAST).
The taming of the BEAST is laid out in several steps. After an introduction to coding, trellis and tree representations of codes are reviewed as prerequisites for understanding the BEAST. Maximum-likelihood decoding using BEAST, and its generalization to list decoding are presented first. An investigation of geometrical aspects of list decoding has resulted in new bounds on the list error probability. It is shown that the performance of a list decoder is determined by the worst-case list configuration, which yields the minimum list distance of a code.
A commonly used approach for achieving a good performance/complexity tradeoff is to use concatenated codes with iterative decoding, where decoders of constituent codes, employed as separate entities, iteratively exchange information on decoded symbols. In such a setup, the decoders provide soft symbol reliabilities in the form of a posteriori probabilities (APPs). It is shown that accurate APP approximations can be obtained from a short list of the most probable codewords found by BEAST. This decoding method is referred to as BEAST-APP decoding. Product codes belong to the class of iteratively decodable codes and the BEAST-APP decoder is used for decoding of constituent codes, yielding good performance with low complexity. Finally, BEAST is applied as soft-input soft-output detector for transmission over intersymbol interference channels. Its advantages and limitations in comparison to existing decoding methods are discussed.

Christer Wibom och Phat Tran presenterar sitt examensarbete "Simulation and Analysis of a Wireless Ad-hoc Network using DYMO" på fredag 29/6 10.00 i E:5119.
Abstract
In this master’s thesis project we simulated an ad-hoc network with 90 mobile nodes using ns-2 and nodes will move randomly and dynamically. A total of twenty pairs of simulations with different movement patterns but with the same call pattern were executed. The aim of this project was to develop an energy aware routing algorithm (E-DYMO) from DYMO. DYMO is a reactive routing protocol and is based on the routing protocols AODV and DSR. E-DYMO chooses the best route based on DYMO criteria and an additional condition based on the remaining energy and hop count.
A comparison between E-DYMO and DYMO was made to see the effect of the modification that was made. Some of the metrics that were compared was hop count and remaining energy in the network. One finding was that E-DYMO transmits more route requests and that communications could switch path during a connection. During the project we discovered that there are routing loops in the network for data packets.

Friday 29/6 at 15.15 in E:2311, will Rafael Inda Cervino present his master thesis "Low complexity real-time object localization in a surveillance application"
Abstract
Surveillance systems are widely used in many different fields nowadays. They are
present everywhere, even small businesses install them to improve security. Those
systems evolve to better resolutions and services at a lower cost and this makes the
designers to look for optimized models which offer high functionality with low silicon
area and memory requirements. A surveillance system starts with the sensor that
takes the information from the real world and ends on a screen or recorder. There are
many blocks in between and different configurations and solutions are possible. This
thesis is a combination between research and development of an original project at
the department of Electrical and Information technology. The goal is to implement
and verify a module that tracks objects using the concept of image projections.

Fredrik Kristensen

Exjobbspresentation 21/6 "CNN Template Optimization"
Publicerad: 2007-06-20
Thursday 21 june at 09.00 (sharp) in E:3139:
Eugenia Planas, exchange student from Barcelona (Spain), will present her examensarbete "CNN Template Optimization"
All Welcome!
Abstract
Since their invention in 1988, Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) have become a more than suitable tool for modelling nonlinear systems. Nevertheless, the need for efficiency improvement in digital emulations requires a radical reduction of the word width in the internal values. The search for robust templates capable of performing an operation successfully while still meeting these requirements becomes, therefore, crucial. Nevertheless, two other parameters must be taken into consideration when it comes to the behaviour of the network: boundary conditions and input images.
Both software and hardware tools are used to evaluate the influence of these parameters in order to obtain templates that are not only robust after truncation, but can also perform an operation correctly under any boundary condition and any input image. The found robust templates pave the way for future research to improve CNN effectiveness.

Exjobbsredovisning 21/6 "Meet the i-Cat"
Publicerad: 2007-06-20
Thursday 21 june at 09.35 (sharp) in E:3139:
Barbara Olmedo, exchange student from Madrid (Spain), will present her examensarbete "Meet the i-Cat"
All Welcome!
Abstract
The i-Cat is a robot with a basic software platform and a variety of sensors. It is meant to prototype artificial social behavior in direct interaction with one of more human beings, but also provides further connectivity to a digital network.
The design of embedded networks is still unchartered territory. Where requirements capture is already a problem to conventional software engineering, it becomes even more so when the software is distributed and/or embedded.
The project aims to investigate how such may be mechanized by copying concepts from movie story writing. It should connect to the existing world of software engineering through the use of UML in order to demonstrate a structured design approach. The effectiveness will be analysed by building such a demonstration on the i-Cat.

Onsdag 20/6 13.15 i E:3139: Ricardo Blasco och Gustavo Ambrosio, utbytesstudenter från Spain, presenterar sitt examensarbete "Joint Selection of Channel and Voice Coding for Secure Voice"
Välkomna!
Abstract
This master thesis is a cooperative project between Information Technology
department at LTH and Business Security AB, Lund. The goal is to develop a
practical solution for voice and channel coding in the framework of an
encryption system over certain degraded telephone lines. In order to have
safe communications over a plain telephone line it is necessary to
digitize information and apply an encryption algorithm. Due to the nature
of encryption systems and the telephone channel it is also necessary to
add some error control coding system that makes communication reliable.
This project is divided into two parts:
-Election of a voice codec (9.6, 4.8 and 2.4 kbps) that guarantees speech
quality.
-Design of a coding scheme to mitigate the telephone channel
noise so the errors do not reduce significantly the signal quality.

Wednesday 20 june at 14.15 in E:3139:
Cheng Wang and Xiao Yang, SoC Master students, will present their examensarbete "H.264 Encoding in Parallel"
All Welcome!
Abstract
The image compaction standard H.264 pairs improved quality with steeply raised algorithmic complexity. This puts a lot of pressure on the implementation to reach real-time performance. The presentation discusses architectural means to handle parts of the image in parallel. The conventional approach using a cluster of processors with shared memory suffers from synchronisation problems and prolongued latency. A modified motion prediction algorithm is described and tested on a benchmark set. The results show that a distributed memory architecture is feasible at negligible loss in bit rate and picture quality.

Patrik Assarsson (E02) and Rickard Hammar (E02) presenterar sitt exjobb: "A Feature Delivery Mechanism for C" 8/6 10:15 i rum E3139.
Abstract
When Ericsson Mobile Platform (EMP) sells the platform to their customers
the company delivers most of the source code. This has to be done in order
for the customers to be able to configure the platform according to their
needs. Under those circumstances the customers get access to information
about how the platform is constructed. When it comes to customers that EMP
has good relationships with, this is not an important issue. However, in
order for the company to expand, new customers have to be acquired. In
this case itÇs not desirable to deliver the source code. Today EMP solves
this by managing all the configurations internally. Since every customer
demands several different configurations for their products, this is a
time- and resource consuming process.
There are several different ways to solve the problem of how features can be delivered. One possible solution is to use the concept Product Line. This means that the product is based on a common framework together with possible eligible features. In our case it then would be a matter of dividing source code into common code, feature code and non feature code.

Abstract: A block cipher can securely encrypt an n-bit string. Practical applications require encryption of long and arbitrary length strings. A mode of operation is used to extend the domain of a block cipher. Depending on the particular security requirement, there are different modes of operation. We cover the broad issues of modes of operations of a block cipher with emphasis on authenticated encryption (AE). Some recent work on AE will be described.

Cooperation, Relay Selection, and the effects of Channel State Information
Abstract:
---------
This talk presents recent results on relay selection and cooperative partner selection, under various amounts of channel state information. I first consider non-altruistic cooperation in orthogonal channels (no dedicated relays) with only receive-side channel-state information (CSI). Each node is unaware of location and channel gains of other nodes. I show that even under these conditions, local node selection strategies exist to guarantee network-wide full diversity. Then I discuss increasing amounts of CSI and how they improve cooperative gains. Performance bounds under an omniscient network controller are demonstrated.
Time permitting, I will talk about opportunistic cooperation with limited feedback, where it is shown that only two bits of information per user is sufficient to ensure optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff, in the case of opportunistic cooperation with dedicated relays. This is a significant advancement over previous methods that required network-wide full CSI at the nodes to achieve opportunistic cooperation.
