Welcome to EITP30: Modern Wireless Systems – 5G and Beyond!
Dive into the exciting world of cutting-edge wireless technology spanning 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth systems!
Course Format
- Primarily onsite: Lectures, exercises, and lab sessions
- Occasional online sessions: Due to travel or other commitments
What You'll Do in 2025
-
Conduct Real 5G Measurements: You'll work hands-on in our state-of-the-art 5G Lab, using professional equipment to capture and analyze live 5G signals. This practical experience will give you invaluable insights into real-world 5G network operations and the Initial Access procedure.
-
Master MATLAB and 5G Toolbox: Through compulsory lab work, you'll become proficient in using MATLAB's 5G Toolbox. You'll process and interpret the data you've collected, gaining deep understanding of 5G signal characteristics, OFDM principles, and network performance metrics.
-
Explore Multiple Wireless Technologies: Beyond 5G, you'll investigate Wi-Fi evolution from 1 Mb/s to today's 10 Gb/s systems, and discover Bluetooth's fascinating history – originally developed right here in Lund in the 90s! Learn about Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and how these technologies complement 5G networks.
-
Apply Theory to Practice: In preparation for the final written exam, you'll connect theoretical concepts learned in lectures with your practical lab experiences. You'll solve complex problems involving OFDM advantages and limitations, channel estimation, synchronization, and beamforming that mirror real-world challenges.
-
Collaborate on Cutting-Edge Projects: Work in teams to tackle current challenges in Real 5G Measurements. You'll design experiments, analyze results, and present your findings, simulating the collaborative environment of industry research teams.
-
Learn from Industry Experts: Gain insights from invited speakers representing Ericsson and Volvo, who will share their vision on current system challenges and future evolution trajectories in wireless communications.
-
Master the 5G Initial Access Procedure: Understand in detail how User Equipment (UE) finds and connects to the most suitable Base Station (BS), covering synchronization signals, cell-identity calculation, and broadcasting information – fundamental knowledge for any wireless engineer.
This hands-on, application-focused approach will equip you with the skills and knowledge sought after by leading companies in the telecommunications industry. Get ready for an exciting and challenging year ahead!
