Main areas of interest are
digital library development;
parallell/distributed computing; focused (topical) Web crawling;
advanced methods for information discovery and retrieval;
and
automatic subject classification/text mining. Focus areas are knowledge discovery and development of distributed
knowledge organization technologies and information systems. In
particular exploring the usability of knowledge organization systems
(thesauri, classifications, taxonomies, ontologies, gazetteers)
in the digital library context. He is maintaining the Combine system, which is an open system for crawling [harvesting and threshing (indexing)]
Internet resources. It can be used both as a general and focused crawler. Combine is implemented in Perl, freely available, and is easily configured for most types of Web-crawling.
