The language-communication complex
1993-
|
Sammanfattning:
|
This project is conducted according to a research program (program for language-based research) outlined in Löfgren (2004). Namely to search for hidden presuppositions, rather than primarily searching for absolute scientific truths. And, upon revelation of a new presupposition, to revise the domain of inquiry accordingly. The project is realized along the following perspectives.
- Observer-presuppositions: holistic generalization of Pauli’s perspective of “diminishing the detachment of the observer” to “diminishing the detachment of language” (a nonzero residue unavoidable due to the principle of nondetachability of language).
- Part-Whole perspective: revelation of questionable fragmentabilities and analyzabilities (literally, to analyze means to break into fragments), revealed in genuinely holistic systems concepts like natural language. Violation of Carnap’s semiotic fragmentation thesis in holistic language. The simple presuppositions behind holistic language; the principle of “non-detachability of language” as a view of the linguistic complementarity, allowing weighings (but no clean cuts) between describability and interpretability within a language.
- Revelation of genetic language as vital presupposition for human communication language (with its potential for induction and planning);
- Holistic language as a system of Genetic Language and Communication language. This wide concept of holistic language has been suggested as paradigm for “Natural Language”, as well as for “General Systems”, and for “Holistic Cybernetics”.
- Presuppositions behind “certainty of uncertainty”. In particular, we compare presuppositions behind Zadeh’s “Generalized theory of uncertainty” (Computational Statistics and Data Analysis 2006, 15-46), where he aims at NL-capability (natural language capability), with presuppositions behind our holistic model for natural language

Successively obtained results of the research project are given in publications as follows.
- Löfgren 1993 is a basic paper which started the project. In Löfgren 2008 the questions of nondetachability of an observer are transferred to observers sharing a communication language. That is, to the question of nondetachability of language.
- The part-whole perspective and its leading to the linguistic complementarity, and to holistic language, are accounted for in for example Löfgren 1998, Löfgren 2000 [Fragmentability, a founda..], Löfgren 2000 [Understandings of time..], Löfgren 2004.
- An early hint is given in the basic paper Löfgren 1990 “On the partiality of self-reference” where I contrast planning languge with genetic language. Their holistic unification, is accounted for in for example Löfgren 2004 “Unifying foundations – to be seen in the phenomenon of language” and Löfgren 2008 .
- Holistic language as paradigm for various systems, and cybernetic, concepts are dealt with in Löfgren 2002 “What is systems science” and in Löfgren 2008 “Holistic cybernetics – conceived as the result of a gradually lessened ‘detachment of the observer’”.
- A paper on the basic impredicativity in “certainty of uncertainty” is in progress. It is an often neglected query, yet occurring in well known fields like computability, probability, information, measurability, quantum theory, not to speak of “artificial intelligence”, holistic language and natural language. In the paper we also compare the basic presupposition behind explanations in holistic language with those behind Zadeh’s approach to “natural language capability” (NL-capability).
