We have had some confusion regarding the network problems on the old exams. Here are some clarifications:
1. A host that is connected to a network is assumed to know four essential things:
(a) Its own IP address
(b) The IP address to its closest DNS server
(c) The IP address to its default gateway (router)
(d) Its subnet mask
2. When a host wants to send an IP packet with destination address belonging to another network, it sends the IP packet to its default gateway. The host itself can discover that the IP address belongs to another network by using its subnet mask.
The books and the lectures have not been clear on this topic, sorry for this.

Forouzan describes Selective Repeat ARQ differently in 4th and 5th edition. We will follow the lecture slides. The important thing is that there are protocol rules for resending specific frames that the receiver miss. Therefore NAKs should be used, see here.
